Meditteranean Trip

Hi everyone,

John & I took a cruise from Italy to Greece and back. The following email text and pictures tell the story.

Hi Wendi & girls,

I wanted to let you know that I arrived safely here in Chicago. I spent today with my brother John and his family. After taking a nap to catch up on some sleep, John and I did a little shopping to pick up a few more items for our trip. Then we went and played tennis. I beat him soundly 4 games to zip!

We came back and had dinner at his house. Then John built a fire in his backyard firepit. His kids wanted to tell scary ghost stories, so we took turns telling a made up story. The story got a little scary, and a lot gross (thanks to your cousin Jonathan's fascination with bathroom humor).
Anyways, I hope you all are doing well and having some fun.

See ya

Hi Wendi & girls,

John and I were able to spend some time in Chicago on the way to our flight. We rented some bikes and rode around town. We were also able to go to the top of the Sears tower (the tallest building in America). Chicago is a beautiful city.

Our flight to Europe went fairly well. We flew into Madrid Spain, and then onto Venice. I am now aboard my ship. We have been at sea today on our way to Athens, Greece. John and I played a bit of ping pong & shuffleboard, and then attended a formal dinner this evening.

Take care!

Hi Wendi & girls,
The last three days in Greece have been fun. On Monday, we visited Athens. John & I opted to take the tour offered by Flooring America. We saw many ancient ruins including the Acropolis (on top of a hill overlooking Athens). I have attached a picture of one of the buildings. We also went to the old part of the city (Plaka) and had a nice Greek dinner at a sidewalk cafe.

On Tuesday, we visited Mykonos. This is a small island between Greece & Turkey. We decided to rent a couple of motor bikes and go exploring. We went all
over the island. John went swimming at the famous “Paradise beach”, and we had a great lunch at a Greek cafe in a little village up in the hills. I have attached a picture of myself on a motor scooter bike.
Today we docked in the Greek port of Katakolo, rented scooters again, and set off to explore the local area. We road south along the beach, stopping to do a little beach combing, and then heading inland, we picked up the fixings for lunch at a grocery store and at a bakery. We dropped by Olympia (the site of the first Olympics in the 8th century) on our way back to the ship.

Coming back, we got turned around a few times (all the road signs were in Greek, and the map they gave us was in English), and we almost missed our ship. I am attaching a photo of where we stopped to eat lunch close to Mount Olympus.

I hope you are all doing well, and having fun.

Hi Wendi & girls,
Well, my trip is coming to an end. We have just left port for the final leg back to Venice. It has been an interesting adventure.
Yesterday we were in Corfu, which is a small island off the west coast of Greece. We had enjoyed exploring on motorbikes the past few days, so we rented some again. We traveled across the island to the West side, and went to a few beaches and to an old monastery. We bought some lunch at a local store, and ate on another beach. We were having a lot of fun cruising up and down the mountain roads, when John took a spill on a sharp turn. He scraped himself up pretty good, and busted up the motorbike some too. We drove down into the valley a ways, and a kind old man at a gas station 'doctored' him up. After that, we were happy to return to the ship and relax.

Today we were in Split, Croatia. It rained all day. When we went to leave the cruise ship the wind was blowing and the rain was coming down so hard, that John and I were fairly soaked before we even left the dock. Luckily, the wind let up once we entered the city, and the umbrellas we had kept us somewhat dry. We wandered around a bit, and then ventured into the 'old' town. We toured a very old cathedral (a pope, and an Roman Emperor are buried there), climbed the bell tower which was cool, and explored the remains of a Roman palace, located beneath the city.

After that we found ourselves climbing towards a hill overlooking the city and the harbor. The view from the top was great except for the driving rain, and gusting wind. We did a little souvenir shopping and then, rather footsore, we returned to the ship.
Tomorrow, we arrive back in Venice. We should have some time to wander that city, and then my flight back (19 hours on 3 planes) leaves early Sunday morning. I should be home late Sunday night.

See you soon,

Here are a couple of pictures from Venice. It took John and I a little while and a lot of walking to

navigate the maze of streets and canals. All in all though, it was a very interesting city.
