It had been a long time since we took a vacation/trip down south. So, when our schedules came together, and a 10 day slot magically opened up, we took the plunge and planned this road trip.
Friday, August 6th
Wendi had not seen her father in several years, so we flew into Phoenix (on the red eye). We took a limo (it was a good deal) to pick up our rental car (Sebring convertible). Our visit with Grandpa Burr went well.
Saturday, August 7th
We drove from Phoenix to Las Vegas, stopping to see the Joshua trees, catus covered hills, and the Hoover Dam. We arrived in the early evening, and had some fun driving through town with the top down.
Sunday, August 8th
We spent the day in Las Vegas visiting the Eves; some Alaska friends of Emilee & Grace who had recently moved to Nevada. Late in the afternoon we drove to Barstow California (Lots of traffic . . . . )
Monday, August 9th
We drove to Los Angeles, spent some time at the beach in Santa Monica, and experienced L.A. traffic on our way to Bakersfield for the night.
Santa Monica ocean view
Tuesday, August 10th
Drove to and through Sequoia National Park. Saw some big trees, went for a hike and found some enormous pine cones. This was one of the nicest days of our trip. Spent the night in Mariposa, California.
Our family in Sequoia National Park
Wednesday, August 11th
A day in Yosemite national park. We went for a hike, climbed up to Yosemite falls and enjoyed the valley.

Our car - somewhere in central California
Thursday, August 12th
Drove thru San Fransisco. Stopped at the golden gate bridge for pictures, etc. Drove to Petaluma for the night. Went for a swim in the motel pool, then enjoyed a nice mexican dinner and frozen yougurt for desert.
Friday, August 13th
Drove north along the California coast. Stopped at the 'world famous' treehouse and the Paul Bunyan statue along the way. Went for a hike at dusk in a slightly spooky redwood grove.
Our girls enjoyed getting out of the car on the longest drive of our trip (8 hours)
Saturday, August 14th
Drove north along the Oregon coast. Stopped a few times to stretch our legs.
Emilee enjoyed her pie (lunch in Reedsport, Oregon)
Arrived in Eugene around 4:00. Visited with Grandma Kroeger for a couple of hours. We were very fortunate to see her before she passed on. All of us enjoyed our visit and we miss her.
Sunday, August 15th
Spent the whole day in Newport Oregon. Our hotel was on the beach, and we went treasure hunting. Grace found this jellyfish stranded on the beach. We decided to 'rescue' it, and with some difficulty tranported it back to the water with a couple of sticks.
Monday, August 16th
We decided to make the most of our drive to Portland. On the way, we stopped at the aquarium in Newport, and the Tillamook factory. Emilee and Grace did not want to leave without getting some ice cream. Yes, it was good!

What a trip. Maybe a little too much driving (2100 miles), but a lot of fun too.
